Frequently asked questions

How is the URL parsed?

With the browser’s own URL API, which follows the WHATWG URL standard: the same rules your browser uses to open links.

Why did the port disappear?

The default port of a scheme (443 for https, 80 for http) is dropped, as browsers do. Any other port is kept.

How are parameters encoded?

The rebuilt query uses form encoding: spaces become +, and reserved characters become %XX. The values you see and edit are always the decoded text.

Are credentials in the URL a problem?

Passwords in URLs end up in logs and browser history, so avoid them. This tool only shows them to you; nothing is sent anywhere.

What about non-ASCII host names?

The host is shown in its ASCII (punycode) form, as the URL standard defines. Use the Punycode converter to read it.
