Frequently asked questions
Are my images uploaded?
No. They are decoded and re-encoded by your browser with the canvas API. Nothing is sent to a server.
Which format should I choose?
WebP is a good default for the web: much smaller than JPEG or PNG at the same quality. Use JPEG for photos that must open everywhere, PNG for screenshots and graphics with sharp edges or transparency, and AVIF for the smallest files if your browser can create it.
Why is AVIF or WebP greyed out?
Your browser cannot encode that format. Chrome and Edge can create WebP and AVIF, Firefox creates WebP, Safari creates neither. The tool only offers what your browser can really produce.
What does the quality slider do?
For JPEG, WebP and AVIF it trades detail for size: 75–85 is usually indistinguishable from the original. PNG is lossless, so it has no quality setting.
What happens to transparency when I convert to JPEG?
JPEG has no transparency, so transparent areas are filled with the background colour you choose (white by default).
Is metadata kept?
No. Re-encoding through the canvas drops EXIF, GPS and colour profile data, which also makes the files smaller.
Why did my file get bigger?
Converting an already well-compressed image, or choosing PNG for a photo, can increase the size. The list shows the change so you can pick another setting.
