Frequently asked questions

How are the words found?

The text is split at spaces, punctuation, underscores and hyphens, and at changes from lower to upper case (fooBar becomes foo, Bar). Acronyms stay together: XMLHttpRequest becomes XML, Http, Request.

What does the slug do with accents?

It removes them (café becomes cafe, ñ becomes n), turns ß into ss, lower-cases everything and joins the words with hyphens, keeping only a–z and 0–9.

How does Title Case treat small words?

Short English words such as a, the, of or and stay in lower case, except at the start or the end of the line.

Does it work with non-English text?

Yes for letters of any alphabet in the programming cases. The slug keeps only ASCII, so letters like Cyrillic or Chinese are dropped.
