Passphrase Generator
Make a passphrase of random words from the EFF large Diceware wordlist: easy to remember, hard to guess. Each word adds about 12.9 bits of entropy.
Runs in your browser — nothing is uploaded.
How to use it
- Choose how many words (6 is a good default) and the separator.
- Optionally capitalise the words or add a digit if a site demands one.
- Copy a passphrase, or generate a batch and copy or download them all.
Frequently asked questions
Is anything uploaded?
No. The wordlist ships with this page, words are picked in your browser with crypto.getRandomValues, and nothing is sent, stored or logged. The page has no ads or third-party scripts.
How many words do I need?
Each word adds log2(7776) ≈ 12.92 bits. Five words give about 64 bits, six about 78 and seven about 90. Six is plenty for most accounts; use more for a password-manager master passphrase or an encryption key.
Does capitalising or adding a digit help?
Barely. Capitalising every word adds nothing to the entropy, because the attacker knows the rule. A digit appended to one word adds about log2(words × 10) bits. Add them only to satisfy a site’s rules; add a word instead for real strength.
Where does the wordlist come from?
It is the EFF Large Wordlist for Passphrases, designed for dice-rolling (5 dice per word), with 7,776 words that are easy to spell and distinct from one another. It is licensed CC BY 3.0 US.
