MIME Types Lookup
Look up the Content-Type of a file extension (.png, .json, .webp) or the extensions that belong to a MIME type (application/pdf), using the community-maintained mime-db list built from the IANA registry.
Runs in your browser — nothing is uploaded.
For example .png, application/pdf or svg.
No MIME type matches your search.

How to use it
- Type an extension (.png or png), a full type (application/pdf) or part of one (svg, image/).
- Leave “Common types only” ticked to see the types used every day, or untick it to browse the whole list.
- Press Copy to put the type in your clipboard, ready for a Content-Type header.
Frequently asked questions
Where does the list come from?
From the open-source mime-db package, which merges the IANA media type registry with types used in practice by Apache and nginx. It is bundled with this page; nothing is looked up online.
What is application/octet-stream?
The generic type for binary data of unknown kind. Browsers treat it as a download. Use a more specific type when you know it.
Should I add charset=utf-8?
For text types (text/html, text/css, application/json…) it is common and safe to send charset=utf-8. Binary types such as image/png take no charset.
Why do some types have several extensions?
Because files of the same format use different extensions, such as .jpg, .jpeg and .jpe for image/jpeg. The first one listed is the usual choice.
Why does one extension map to more than one type?
Some extensions are claimed by several formats (for example .xml or .ts). The best match is shown first.
